The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. But Jamie is no ordinary child. Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn. But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine – as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave.
Later is Stephen King at his finest, a terrifying and touching story of innocence lost and the trials that test our sense of right and wrong. With echoes of King’s classic novel It, Later is a powerful, haunting, unforgettable exploration of what it takes to stand up to evil in all the faces it wears.

This is my first Stephen King read and I was impressed. This was one of his shorter books (less than 300 pages), but it was still enjoyable to read. The main character, Jamie Conklin, is reflecting back on past events in his life. As he is explaining the events in his life, we find out that he has a rare gift, the ability to see dead people. These “ghosts” aren’t hunting him or anything, they are just kind of there until they disappear, but he can speak with them. One of the things he learns from speaking to the ghosts is that they cannot lie to him.
Because he has this gift, his mother wants him to keep it a secret. Let’s face it, secrets a rarely kept a secret. His mom uses his gift for her gain during his younger years and it eventually effects him during his teenage years. If you like paranormal/supernatural books, I recommend this book. While not really scary, there are some creepy elements in this book.
Later was a quick read and I really enjoyed it. I will be reading more Stephen King books in the future. I mean, you hear nothing but good things about his books for the most part. Also, I really LOVED the cover of this book. It gave me an old school vibe and is what really grabbed my attention to want to read this book.
My Rating:

Have you read Later or any other books by Stephen King? What would you recommend?
