Ok, ok…maybe I’m bias at this point…but Angie Thomas just doesn’t miss man. I loved this book. Up to this point, I have read every single one of Angie Thomas’ books and I love them. She’s a really good writer and at this point, I would recommend her books to anyone that is interested in Young Adult books.
On the Come Up took me back to my high school days. Brianna “Bri” Jackson is a 16 year old, who is trying to figure out who she is, while having a big dream of becoming a rapper. Bri didn’t grow up in nice neighborhood and she didn’t have a wealthy family. With her family struggling to make ends meet, she finds herself becoming really desperate to achieve that dream. Bri also lost her dad when she was 12 years old when a rival gang shot him. He was an underground rapper who’s career was just about to take off. With Bri having the same dream, she was willing do what she could to get her career running. She knew that this was what her family needed to begin to live better lives. This book will take you through Bri’s journey while living in Garden Heights (yes, Garden Heights, my THUG fans know lol)
I found myself being very connected to this book because I could understand from my journey as a high schooler and trying to find myself and sometimes feeling like I had to have a certain image to be noticed. As a teen, when you are desperate to make your dreams come true, you will find yourself making decisions without actually thinking about the consequences.
Angie Thomas is an amazing Author and if you love her other books, then you will enjoy this book as well.
